"breakin' the law, breakin' the law"...check the video.

This week I had a crazy nightmare. Most of the details are lost to my habits. However, the main story is vivid as hell. I'm outside, and I look up and see a jet fall out of the sky. It doesn't go screaming toward the earth, but rather loses momentum. Like a car running out of gas. This prolongs the anxiety while the plane plummets. The actual impact was not the scary part, it was the falling. Hell, I don't even remember the impact, just the blaze. A second plane repeated the swan dive in similar fashion. And all I remember saying is, "It's happening again."

All of us [on 'The Daily Show'] are just blown away by the turn the campaign has taken," Karlin said. "We cannot believe that this is what is being talked about at this juncture. It's so astounding to us. We are trying to work through our amazement and to conduct a meaningful conversation absent of incredulity, because [the interview] is not going to go anywhere if you just say, 'What the [expletive] is going on?' "

"If you just want to pinpoint the success of the Republican Party and Bush, this is a perfect case study," Karlin continued, "because George W. Bush has put a moratorium on talk about his behavior under the age of 40 and everyone [in the press] is abiding by it. 'Were you or were you not an alcoholic or did you just have a drinking problem?,' 'Were you or were you not a drug abuser?' Meanwhile they're debating whether [Kerry's war] wounds drew blood or were they superficial, or occurred in the same day, or whether he shot a guy wearing a toga. . . . How is that possible?"

The inherent unsustainability of capitalism (any idiot can tell you a system that is unsustainable is doomed. unsustainable meaning in this case a system based on infinite growth via finite resources) has been a sort of personal research project for years now. Not that only capitalist societies are wasteful and polluters, but capitalists just happen to be the largest offenders in these categories, save China. And the warning signs are everywhere: Oil prices jumping. Climate change. Resistance by foreign and less powerful countries to becoming mere markets whose benefits will never reach their part of the world. And now this. Nothing earthshattering, just not something I considered before now. We all know it's incredibly inefficient to extract the energy from a pound of beef or poultry compared to, say, grain. Now, vegatarians are extremists in my opinion, but that's not to say their beliefs don't have any merit. But no one ever made a water argument to me before. And since water is kinda important in the grand scheme of things, I'm taking notice.

The time for lipservice and reversed environmental policies is coming to an end. And hopefully it will end voluntarily, because... "

"I think the world's future water supply is a problem that's an entire order of magnitude greater than we've begun to realise."
....and us humans aren't too good at taking a hint until the hint gives us a good beat down.

Monday, August 2

Every Monday morning I call my parents to check in and let them know I'm still okay. They appreciate it. Well, this morning my Dad called me from the cell phone. He starts the conversation by saying Mom and he are on their way to Bethesda (Medical Center). My immediate thoughts are all lousy, so I was actually pleased to hear that they were visiting the hospital due to the small fact that my dad ran over his foot with a lawn-mower this weekend.

I checked in later to get the full details. Dad was backing up a hill while mowing with a standard gas-powered push mower. He was in a rush for something, so he wasn't wearing his steel-toed boots as he usually does. As he backed up the hill he tripped backwards over a stump. Falling backwards, one's natural instinct is to grab hold of whatever possible. What was possible for my dad was only the mower. So he basically pulled the mower over his foot, cutting his toes, breaking bones, causing whatever mayhem a dirty tennis shoe and lawn mower blade can cause.

He's in surgery now. My mom has been assured it's nothing she needs to be concerned about... A common procedure. They need to clean the foot, get at the infection, and repair the work done by the local hospital this weekend. They're hopeful he'll be out by his birthday (Thursday). He'll no longer have the top half of the second toe on his right foot.

Happy Birthday Stumpy!
